Career Mentorship Workshop: Pathways into Arbitration Practice

Riara University is set to host an upcoming Career Mentorship Workshop, co-hosted with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Kenya Branch. The workshop is designed to provide law students with practical exposure to arbitration as a career path and to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice.

While Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is offered as an elective unit for third- and fourth-year students, opportunities for direct engagement with arbitration practitioners remain limited. This workshop addresses that gap by connecting students with experienced advocates and arbitration practitioners who will demonstrate how theoretical concepts are applied in real-world dispute resolution.

A key focus of the session will be career guidance and skills development. Discussions will explore entry points into arbitration practice, the competencies required for success, and the professional development roadmap for aspiring arbitrators. These insights are particularly valuable for students approaching graduation who are making critical decisions about internships, clerkships, and further training.

The workshop will also feature a structured mentorship and networking session using a speed-rotation format, ensuring that participants engage meaningfully with multiple practitioners. This interaction provides students with candid insights into the realities of arbitration practice and the opportunity to build early professional relationships.

Beyond the event, the workshop marks the first step in a sustainable partnership between YAS Riara and the Young Members Group of CIArb Kenya. The collaboration envisions future workshops and potential internship placements, strengthening Riara University’s commitment to producing practice-ready law graduates.
