Prof. Wanja Tenambergen, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Riara University, recently chaired a distinguished panel session titled “Building Resilient Higher Learning Institutions Ecosystems in Africa” during the East Africa Hub Education Collaborative convening held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 3rd to 4th October 2024.
The panel featured thought leaders from both academia and industry, who explored the crucial role of resilience within African Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) in responding to global and regional challenges.
The discussion highlighted the growing need for African HLIs to anticipate and adapt to rapid shifts in technology, policy, and economic environments. Panelists emphasized that building resilience requires robust institutional systems, a commitment to innovation, and the establishment of sustainable partnerships with industry. These efforts are vital to ensuring that learning, teaching, and research continue to excel, even in times of disruption.
Prof. Tenambergen emphasized that the foundation of resilience lies in creating adaptive ecosystems that allow institutions to navigate uncertainty. She underscored the critical role of digital transformation, strong collaborations with industry, and integrating sustainable practices into curriculum design and institutional operations. Such strategies not only prepare students for the dynamic job market but also equip universities to respond swiftly to global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and economic instability.
As Riara University continues its pursuit of academic excellence and innovation, Prof. Tenambergen reaffirmed the university’s dedication to reinforcing industry partnerships to enhance learning outcomes and future-proof graduates. This collaborative approach is essential to cultivating a resilient higher education ecosystem capable of withstanding challenges while contributing to Africa’s broader socio-economic development.
