Karibu Riara: Welcoming SHOFCO Students to Campus
On Monday, 11th August 2025, Riara University proudly hosted over 80 sponsored high school girls from SHOFCO (Shining Hope for Communities) for a Karibu Riara experience at the University Gardens, Raila Odinga Way Campus. The visit was designed to give the students a first-hand feel of campus life, inspire their academic aspirations and help them envision future career paths.
The girls, drawn from Form 2 and Form 3 classes, are part of SHOFCO’s education empowerment programme that supports learners from underprivileged backgrounds through mentorship, life skills and educational sponsorship. For many of them, stepping onto a university campus was a transformative experience, bridging the gap between high school and higher education and motivating them to pursue their dreams.
Highlights of the session included:
Dr. Julius Otundo, Head of Professional Development and Training spoke about the future of jobs, encouraging learners to prepare for a fast-changing world shaped by technology, innovation and new career demands. He emphasized the importance of adaptability, continuous learning and acquiring skills that will remain relevant in the future job market.
Prof. Wanja Tenambergen, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs, inspired the students with a powerful message on self-belief. She reminded them not to place limits on themselves but instead to remain open to opportunities that can shape their future. Her talk highlighted the value of confidence, resilience and taking initiative in order to achieve one’s goals.
Together, their talks motivated the students to dream bigger, embrace opportunities and proactively prepare for their future careers.
The event was both educational and motivational, offering the girls a chance to interact with faculty, staff and alumni while asking questions about career options and university life.
This Karibu Riara – SHOFCO edition reaffirmed Riara University’s commitment to empowering the next generation through education, mentorship and exposure. By opening its doors to these young learners, Riara University continues to champion inclusivity and opportunity, inspiring students to dream bigger and prepare better for the future.
